Apple surpasses Spotify with most paid U.S. subscribers

Spotify still holds the No. 1 spot worldwide with 207 million active users. According to the company, 96 million subscribers currently pay for the service or are in a trial period leading to a paid subscription. Apple has more than 50 million worldwide paid subscriptions, but does not offer a free, ad-supported tier like Spotify does.
Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) has released a research report estimating that Spotify added 3 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2019. When reached for clarification, CIRP said that it estimates Spotify ended the quarter with 28 million to 29 million paid premium subscribers.
According to the Wall Street Journal article Apple Music ended February with 28 million U.S. subscribers. So either Spotify or Apple could be #1, depending on who added the most subscribers in March.
With 159 million active users streaming 25 hours per month, Spotify is currently the largest music-streaming service in the world [1]. While the industry is growing in both users and streaming engagement, the space remains extremely competitive with big-name players like Apple, Amazon and Pandora. As of summer 2018, Apple Music surpassed Spotify in terms of paid subscribers in the US, and the gap expected to widen by this Christmas [2].
Furthermore, I believe there is an opportunity to use machine learning to identify patterns among subscribers and sell these insights to artists and labels. Are subscribers listening to my music and is now a good time to go on tour? If so, could I tour with another artist (e.g., an artist that my fans also like)? What cities and concert venues am I most likely to be profitable? These key questions could be answered by pairing streaming data and machine learning predictions.
However, if we consider global numbers, Spotify is way ahead of Apple's music streaming platform with up to 140 million subscribers and listeners. Moreover, as of last month, Spotify also records 70 million paid subscribers. With that said, the music streaming giant is still way ahead of Apple Music on a global scale.
Spotify disappointed investors last week with reported losses of $2.20 per share, an almost 224 percent drop compared to analysts' estimates, which pegged per-share losses at 68 cents. This was only Spotify's second quarter as a public company, and although it's still not profitable -- royalties for artists and record labels are proving costly -- it did report significant gains for user numbers.
